The Swiss photographer and artist Hannes Schmid first came to public notice in the 1970s with a body of important work that has continued to find acclaim in the international art world ever since. In the 1990s he created his cowboy, who achieved iconic status worldwide and even left his mark on Conceptual Art. In Switzerland, interest in Schmid’s art began with a weighty tome containing a unique collection of his rock star images, which was published as a book. In 2010, the Swiss Foundation of Photography stages a one-man show of Schmid‘s cowboy portraits, the first after New York. And in 2012, the Kunstmuseum in Bern will be putting on a large-scale retrospective of Schmid’s work. Other major projects such as “For Gods Only”, “Maha Kumbh Mela” and “F1 Moment of a Moment” are currently the subject for exhibitions. Hannes Schmid has also made films parallel to many of his projects, and of these the feature film “bonneville: The Final Run” deserves special mention.

Hannes Schmid ist Schweizer Fotokünstler. Angefangen hat Schmid seine Karriere mit Reisereportagen, bekannt wurde er aber als Fotograf der Cowboy-Fotos für Marlboro-Werbekampagnen, die sich inzwischen auch in den Sammlungen grosser Kunstmuseen finden.
Zwischen 1978 und 1984 begleitete Schmid über 250 Rockbands und Stars. In dieser Zeit entstanden über 70.000 Fotos. Die grossformatigen Fotografien wurden in diversen Ausstellungen gezeigt, 2009 erschien dazu eine repräsentative Publikation.
Neben kommerziellen Aufträgen realisierte Hannes Schmid auch immer wieder freie künstlerische Projekte, wie Maha Kumbh Mela/Human Currents, For Gods Only, Thaipusam, etc. In jüngster Zeit greift er dabei auch auf seine Cowboy-Fotografien zurück und benutzt sie als Vorlagen für fotorealistische Gemälde, die er auf die Leinwand bringt.
